Suicide is a drastic step often taken by individuals who feel completely hopeless and see no glimmer of hope. To prevent such tragedies, World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on September 10. In honor of this day, the Psychology Department at Index Medical College, Malwanchal University organized a workshop aimed at educating students about suicide prevention. The workshop was conducted under the auspices of a non-governmental organization, highlighting the commitment to addressing mental health issues and providing invaluable resources to students.
During the event, Index Group Chairman Suresh Singh Bhadoriya, Dean Dr. G.S. Patel, and psychiatrist Dr. Ramgulam Rajdan launched a book on the subject, “Why Suicide and How to Prevent It.” Dr. Ramgulam Rajdan emphasized that World Suicide Prevention Day is a global campaign aimed at increasing awareness about suicide and providing support to those affected. This year's theme, "Changing the Narrative on Suicide," sheds light on the importance of openly discussing suicide and its causes to help reduce its incidence. The World Health Organization has chosen this theme for the period from 2024 to 2026.
Dr. Rajdan stressed that providing positive social support plays a crucial role in suicide prevention. This support can be fostered through supportive relationships with family, friends, and community members. It is essential to ensure that everyone is aware of and has access to mental health services. Raising awareness about suicide and stress is crucial so that individuals feel more comfortable discussing these issues and seeking help without hesitation. Awareness programs can be implemented in schools, workplaces, and communities. Additionally, training programs for teachers, healthcare providers, nurses, and the general public can also be beneficial.
Dean Dr. G.S. Patel discussed the current state of suicide, its causes, and symptoms. He also provided valuable information on effective coping techniques for managing stress and anxiety. The workshop showcased an innovative approach by the Psychology Department students, who organized poster presentations across the campus to educate their peers about the causes and symptoms of suicide.
By raising awareness and providing education on mental health issues, we can foster a more supportive and informed community, ultimately contributing to the prevention of suicide and the management of stress.
