Workshop on Anxiety Disorders, and its Prevention & Management in undergraduates

A workshop was organized on ‘Anxiety Disorders, and its Prevention & Management in undergraduates’ on 21st March 2022, at LT1 of Index Medical College Hospital & Research Center for the second prof. students.

The course was conducted to broaden the participants’ knowledge on anxiety and how does a group of mental illnesses cause constant fear and worry and restlessness.

The Speaker for the workshop was Dr. Anchala Dixit, Clinical Psychologist. Dept of Psychiatry. IMCHRC

The modules for the workshop were:

  • Introduction and basics
  • Types of Anxiety
  • Discussion on increasing cases of anxiety disorders in medical students
  • Risk factors and etiology
  • Signs & Symptoms of anxiety

The workshop was free for all participants and was done under the aegis of Malwanchal University.

The workshop started with asking students their views on what is anxiety and the causes of it. The speaker spoke about general causes like stressful and traumatic situations resulting in anxiety but focused also on psychosocial factors including genetic vulnerability. The role of health problems was also discussed. Certain personality traits like being overly sensitive to criticism were also explained.

Next the symptoms of the condition were discussed varying from emotional to physical symptoms. The speaker spoke about the 6 most common types of anxiety disorders:

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder
  • Social Phobia
  • Specific Phobia
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Panic Disorder

The various symptoms were discussed including,

  • Feeling nervous, restless or tense
  • Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom
  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems
  • Having difficulty controlling worry

Various risk factors were brought into consideration: Trauma,Stress due to an illness, Stress buildup, Personality, Other mental health disorders, having blood relatives with an anxiety disorder, Drugs or alcohol.

This was followed by an elaborate discussion on the treatment, management & Prevention.

In the end, an assessment was done for the participants.

Workshop on Dealing with Stress as a Medical Student

A workshop was organized on Dealing with Stress as a Medical Student on 16th March 2022, at Index Medical College Hospital & Research Center at LT1.

The Speaker for the coursewas Dr. Vaibhav Chaturvedi, Assistant Professor. Dept of Psychiatry, IMCHRC.

The course was free for all participants and was done under the aegis of Malwanchal University. The modules for the workshop were -

  • Introduction to Stress
  • Causes of Stress
  • Types of Stress
  • Stress and Personality
  • Thoughts, Beliefs and emotions in stress
  • Relaxation and cognitive Techniques
  • Exercise and DIY techniques

The course started with asking students the various causes of stress that they have encountered. They were explained how (School, Homework, Extracurricular activities, Social challenges, Transitions (e.g., graduating, moving out, living independently), Relationships, Work etc) and why does stress occur and the symptoms of stress and their identification.

It focused on explaining methods to tackle unexpected challenges in an organized manner. A popular and easy to remember method: IDEAL was explained.

  • Identify the problem
  • Define the context of the problem
  • Explore possible strategies
  • Act on best solution
  • Look back and learn

The key benefits of stress management were explained that include:

  • What is stress and its impact on the human personality
  • Promotion of positive thought process and thinking outside the box.
  • Improving decision-making abilities and avoiding unnecessary thoughts
  • Building solid interpersonal relationships
  • Developing the ability to learn from mistakes and avoid the repetition of mistakes.

At the end of the workshop, students were asked to share their thoughts and how they think these methods would help them to deal with a stressful situation.
