Known for its inspirational verses and spiritual essence, Sundarkand recounts the heroic deeds of Lord Hanuman, emphasizing values of bravery, devotion, and righteousness. Faculty and students took turns reciting the verses, creating a deep sense of devotion and reverence throughout the gathering.
Faculty members also provided explanations of the verses, enriching the recitation with context and moral lessons. This interactive element deepened the attendees' understanding of the spiritual teachings embedded in Sundarkand, making the event both educational and spiritually enriching. On August 1, 2024, Index Nursing College celebrated Breastfeeding Week with a one-day seminar organized by the departments of Obstetrics, Gynecology (OBG), and Pediatrics to raise awareness about the critical benefits of breastfeeding. Under the theme "Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding for All," the event focused on the essential role of breastfeeding for both maternal and infant health.
The seminar aimed to educate students on the health benefits of breastfeeding, provide support strategies for new mothers, address common breastfeeding challenges, and foster a supportive environment for breastfeeding within the healthcare community. The event ran from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, beginning with an inaugural ceremony where Chief Guests Dr. Sharad Thora, Professor at Index Medical College and former Dean of Chacha Nehru Hospital, and Dr. Deepti Gupta, Professor of OBG, lit the ceremonial lamp along with the organizing team led by Dr. Smriti G. Solomon, Principal of Index Nursing College.
Dr. Sharad Thora delivered the keynote address, emphasizing how breastfeeding helps defend infants against infections, prevents allergies, and reduces chronic health risks. Dr. Deepti Gupta followed with insights into different types of breast milk and breastfeeding positions, highlighting the benefits for both infants and mothers. Dr. G.S. Patel, Dean of Index Medical College, summarized the key points, stressing the importance of ongoing support for breastfeeding mothers.
The seminar concluded with a valedictory session where Dr. Jitendra Chicholkar, Professor of Pediatrics, proposed a vote of thanks. Master of Ceremonies Ms. Nainika Joseph ensured the program flowed smoothly. International Nurses Day is observed annually on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Florence Nightingale's pioneering work during the Crimean War, where she set new standards for nursing care, remains an inspiration for nurses worldwide. The day recognizes the critical role nurses play in providing health care and improving the well-being of society.
The event took place in the Seminar Hall of the college, with B.Sc Nursing and GNM students, along with teaching and nursing staff, attending the ceremony. The Chief Guest, Dr. (Prof.) Smriti G. Solomon, emphasized the importance of nursing as a profession. She stated, “Today, nursing has evolved into a profession with a wealth of skills and professional knowledge. Nurses are the largest group of health professionals, often the closest and sometimes the only available health workers to the public. Adequately trained and motivated nurses are essential to achieving equitable access to quality health services."
The program commenced at 12:00 noon and concluded by 2:00 PM. Miss Prachi Rathore, Nursing Tutor, anchored the event, and Dr. Reena Thakur, HOD of Medical-Surgical Nursing, welcomed the Chief Guest. The event focused on the 2024 theme, “OUR NURSES. OUR FUTURE. THE ECONOMIC POWER OF CARE,” highlighting the significant impact nurses have on health care and the economy.
